"In the 10 years of teaching RME I have not come across anything that matches this project for allowing young people to gain insight and wisdom about how they are and where they are going."

The Poster Programme

The Learning for Life Values Poster Programme is a highly acclaimed interactive learning activity for Y8-Y11 (S1-S4) students that helps them to explore their character, ideals and core values.

Students reflect on essential human qualities such as enthusiasm, courage, love, wisdom, generosity, trust and kindness through a mixture of text, quotations, biographies, poems, parables and stories. They complete a specially designed poster template The E-Poster with support of our Internet resources on this site Themes &: Subjects for background and inspiration.

Since its inception in Scotland in 2005-2006, the programme has reached over 40,000 young people. This year we held national award ceremonies in the parliaments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Every year students write enthusiastically about the impact of the exercise. Here is some feedback from 2009:

  • Taking part in learning for life was great because it helped me find out who I really am and what I stand for. Megan, Knox Academy, Year 8
  • This project made me think about my life and what it is all about. Amy, Ross High School, Year 10
  • Helped me to learn about myself and now I am so much more confident. Andrew, Aboyne Academy, Year 9
  • This poster has helped me to realise that I can do far more to change the world than I ever thought I could. Gareth, St David's High School, Year 10

This innovative and inspiring programme can be used in a wide variety of contexts such as citizenship education, PSHE, guidance or religious and philosophical studies. Outcomes have been mapped against the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and Every Child Matters.

A 2008 survey of participating teachers found that that 61% agreed and 39% strongly agreed that the Values Poster Programme had helped their pupils think differently or more positively in relation to their outlook on life. 95% agreed that it had helped build on the relationship they had with their pupils and 85% agreed that the Programme had inspired their pupils and helped raise their aspirations.

We are sure that your school will find this a hugely rewarding exercise and invite you to find out more and enrol using one of the national links below. If you would like to see some sample prize posters, Please click here
