What Can We Learn from These Lives?

This programme gives you the chance to research the lives of Christian Men and Women to see what we can learn from them. To find out about each life you simply have to click the name on the blue panel to the left. You can then think about the Christian virtues such as justice, restraint, temperance, courage, fortitude, faith, hope, love and charity which these people have possessed. Finally you will complete a specially designed booklet template with a personal reflection section. This is to help pupils build you build your own character and virtues by looking at examples of influential Christians.

What is a Good Christian?

A good Christian is someone who thinks about others and often puts others before themselves. We can often tell a person is good but their actions and deeds. Most of the people included for you to research are Saints but not all. Some are Christian men or women who have lived good lives.

What is a Saint?

There are thousands of Saints and many of them lived hundreds of years ago. Today, churches, schools, towns, roads, football stadiums, golf courses, shopping centres and of course people are all named after Saints. A Saint is a person who lived a good life. Many were the first monks, priests or nuns. Others were Christians when it was dangerous to be a Christian and so they died for their strong beliefs. After Saints have died, people still remember them and lots of Saints are buried in special places.

Who decides who becomes a Saint?

The Roman Catholic and other churches decide on who becomes a Saint. After someone has died and has led a very good life, the church may decide that, that person was a Saint. Their names go on a the Saints lists and this is called “canonisation”.

What is a Martyr?

A martyr is a person who is killed or made to suffer because of his or her beliefs.
